Application of Matting Powder in Powder Coatings

Powder coating is a new type of solvent-free solid powder coating. It has the characteristics of solvent-free, recyclable, environmental protection, energy and resource saving, labor intensity reduction and high mechanical strength of coating film. In recent years, with the change of users' concept of coating gloss, the development speed of domestic semi-gloss and flat powder coatings has accelerated. It is estimated that about 5% to 8% of the output of powder coatings in my country are flat and semi-gloss products.


Powder coating matting is divided into two categories:


1. Physical extinction

That is, the use of inorganic filler filling method reduces the gloss of the coating film. However, since the density of the filler is more than 1/4 higher than that of the resin, in order to achieve the effect of destroying the flatness of the coating film and obtaining a rough surface, the amount of the filler is relatively large, and the direct consequence will be that the leveling and mechanical properties of the coating will be greatly reduced. Therefore, the gloss cannot be reduced very much by this method. In addition, methods such as adding stearate, wax and metal salt complex, metal organic compound, and polymer incompatible with the system can also achieve the purpose of physical extinction.

2. Chemical extinction

At present, the preparation of low-gloss powder coatings is mainly based on chemical matting. The main methods are:


①Add mutually incompatible additives or thermoplastic polymers to the formula to adjust the gloss of the coating film. The principle is to cause the components to become a heterogeneous system, so that the immiscible materials are evenly distributed on the surface of the coating. The original homogeneous system is destroyed, and the purpose of reducing the surface gloss of the coating film is achieved after baking.


② Use two powder coatings with similar properties but different activities to be mixed with each other in an appropriate proportion. A reduction in the gloss of the coating film is achieved due to differences in reactivity or curing temperature.


③Use two curing agents with different curing speeds. When a curing agent first crosslinks with the resin component to form a cured film, due to the insufficient amount of the curing agent, it cannot achieve complete curing, and the coating still has a certain fluidity, so it further interacts with another curing agent. Cross-linking, when the resin is cured for a second time, the surface of the coating film shrinks into an uneven state to produce a matte coating film.
