What is low hydrogen silicone oil?

Low-hydrogen silicone oil is defined relative to high-hydrogen silicone oil (with a hydrogen value of 1.6). It contains silicon-hydrogen bonds with relatively low activity. It is a synthetic modified silicone oil, such as polyether modified silicone oil, alkyl modified silicone oil. The basic raw material of silicone oil is also the crosslinking agent of addition silicone rubber, and it can also be used for hydrophobic treatment of materials.

Low-hydrogen silicone oil products are colorless, viscous and transparent liquids, non-corrosive, flammable, insoluble in water, and easily soluble in organic solvents.

Three synthetic methods

1. Halosilane method

The starting materials of this method are methylhydrogendichlorosilane, dimethyldichlorosilane, trimethylmonochlorosilane and a solvent, which are hydrolyzed and decomposed in the reaction kettle, and then telomerized with concentrated sulfuric acid or a solid acid catalyst to react. After the end of the oil layer, remove the solvent and low boilers, and then decolorize and filter to obtain the finished product; (disadvantages: the reaction is violent, difficult to control, the process is complicated, and a large amount of HCl gas will be released during the reaction process, which is not environmentally friendly)

2. Ring-opening copolymerization method

Using octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane ( D4 ) and tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane ( DH4 ) to carry out ring-opening copolymerization, the reaction is generally carried out under nitrogen atmosphere, and the catalyst can use sulfuric acid, p-toluene, sulfonic acid or acid clay ; (Disadvantages: The reaction process is violent, the raw materials are expensive, and it is currently limited to laboratory research.)

3. High hydrogen content silicone oil telomerization method

Using trimethylsilicon-terminated high hydrogen-containing silicone oil with octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and hexamethyldisiloxane (MM) to carry out telomerization reaction under acid catalysis conditions, the catalyst can be sulfuric acid, trimethylsiloxane Fluoromethanesulfonic acid or solid heteropolyacid.

Because the third method has the advantages of mild reaction conditions, simple reaction process, and easy design of the structure of the obtained product as required, the third method is also a commonly used production process in the market.
